In the Nelson-Golden Bay there is a small group of orchardists who share the same passion for their
trees and their apples: the discoverer of eve® is one of the group. They put their heart and soul
into what they do and they have become known as the Heartland Group. They produce some of the best
apples in the world. From glassy-green Granny Smiths to voluptuous, bosomey NZ Beauty’s; their
trees grow apples like Rose and Temptation and Braeburn.
And the eve® is their apple-pinnacle: one of the finest apples in the world. It’s also one of the
reasons why Nelson is regarded, along with the Loire Valley in France and the Hudson Valley in New
York, as one of the three great apple growing regions of the world.
The Heartland Group has developed their passion into a craft. They call it ‘applecraft’ and its
made up of three disciplines: growing, harvesting and cellaring.
The Heartland team work together: orchardist, harvester and cellarmaster. The Cellarmaster is a
unique role: comparable to a winemaker in the way the Cellarmaster selects apples at different
stages of acid and sugar development and stores them for later release. Done correctly, the apples
hibernate and when released their flavours blossom and they can be used for classical tarts and
pies, sauces or purees, or for the sheer pleasure of just being eaten whole, or as stunning
partners to rich and wonderful cheeses.
The Heartland Group love apples and are deservedly proud of their eve®, one bite and you will be in
love.

The story of eve
In the Nelson-Golden Bay there is a special place: a place where the sun seems brighter and the
days hotter and the night’s crisper and the sky bluer: this place is called Mariri.
And it is here, in Mariri, a Garden of Eden of the Antipodes, near the end of last century, that an
apple tree produced the most wonderful apple bud.
