The tree was in the orchard of a man who was passionate about apples. Every season this
orchardist would look to see if nature had created something unusual amongst his trees.
And one morning it happened. The orchardist saw an apple bud highlighted by a beam of brilliant
sunlight on this special crisp Spring morning: a bud that was brighter and redder than its
siblings. And it made him shiver with an intensity of foresight in a way he will never forget.
Every day he watched the bud grow bigger and brighter and blossom into the most beautiful shape
and colour of any apple he had ever seen. So he gently took the branch of the tree and created
‘brothers’ and ‘sisters’ and a special nursery orchard for them. And the trees grew like the first
tree and the apples were truly beautiful and gave exceptional pleasure on eating. The orchardist
had named the first apple his eve®, and he named eve®’s family Mariri Red.
And so a new apple variety was created. Mariri Red: in honour of the place and the reason where
he first noticed the tiny apple bud.
His eve® developed into an apple with the most magnificent deep rich red colouring; a colour so
evocative of raised passion that in another age it would have been seen as sinful. And yet
paradoxically, when her flesh is bitten into, it is the purest white; but again seemingly sinful in
that it gives so freely of its sweet yet tart juice that it provides the eater with a flood of
sensory pleasures.
This is the apple of a new generation: the apple for a new generation. An apple created by
nature in a special place; an apple nature created to pleasure the palate of an apple lover.
That is the story of the eve® apple of the Heartland Group in Nelson - Golden Bay.
